Please be aware that RVFPCU never makes unsolicited phone calls or sends unsolicited email or text messages asking members to provide or verify personal or account information such as social security numbers, credit or debit card numbers, passwords, user names, or personal identification numbers (PINs).

Identify theft occurs when crooks use other people's personal information to impersonate them and commit fraud such as opening new accounts, buying vehicles, renting apartments, or even scamming others while pretending to be these people.

There are also a variety of scams where con artists send out fraudulent e-mail messages (Phishing) or text messages (Smishing) that appear to come from legitimate organizations or people we may know and trust.

These messages direct people to provide confidential information and may even include links to bogus websites that have logos or even look like the legitimate websites.  Here are some tips to help you avoid becoming a victim.

  • Never respond to an unsolicited message that requests your confidential information such as your account numbers, social security number, or credit card information or PIN.
  • Papers that contain confidential information such as credit card or social security numbers should be shredded instead of tossed in the trash.
  • When entering your PIN number be aware of who is nearby and make sure nobody is peering over your shoulder.
  • Notify us if you ever believe a scammer is impersonating RVFPC.
  • Use the above tabs to visit various websites that offer specific advice and examples of scams and fraud.
